Omar Group, who were recently named as one of the London Stock Exchange Group’s, 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain in 2016, have been taking on apprentices in ever increasing numbers to keep up with demand for their luxury park homes and lodges.
Having delivered over 30% compound annual sales growth over the past three years, and with a new factory extension underway to cope with demand, Omar found themselves in the position where fewer young people were joining the workforce and it had become an increasing challenge to find enough people with the right skills. In order to create more opportunities for young people in the area and to help ensure that demand could be satisfied, Omar has actively recruited a growing number of apprentices.
The company currently employs over 350 staff and has 16 apprentices. These apprentices, studying and learning at the coalface, cross a broad spectrum of trades from Computer Aided Design and IT to decorating, electrical, carpentry and plumbing.
Voicing views highlighted by National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2016), Dean Westmoreland, Omar Group CEO said: “Our apprentices have made a really positive impact to the company, helping us to improve business performance and growth. Over the years we have taken on and retained many apprentices who have become valuable members of staff and looking forward, we hope to take on many more.”
One such employee and former apprentice, 26-year-old Carpenter Jamie Killingworth, has been with the company for ten years. Jamie commented: “Kicking off your career with an apprenticeship is a great way to get a head start. Apprenticeships help you to start working and you can earn a decent wage while you learn key skills and gain qualifications. With an ever-increasing demand for Omar homes, the factory is constantly busy and we’re never short of work! As well as working hard though we manage to have a laugh and there’s always a lot of banter flying around the factory floor! Since starting as an apprentice, I haven’t looked back.”
