Omar Group Awarded by the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service
Omar Group is proud to have been presented an award by the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service in recognition of their support to the local community as an employer of on-call firefighters at Brandon Fire Station.
On-call Firefighters are a vital part of the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, working in small towns or villages from home or their place of work. Trained to the same high standard as whole-time firefighters, including training in first aid and trauma, emergency response duties can include road traffic collisions, forest and heathland fires and domestic and industrial fires. On-call firefighters also assist the RSPCA with animal welfare issues such as trapped animals and help in the local community with youth education - conducting fire station tours and talks for local children.
The fire station at Brandon consists purely of On-call Firefighters and four (soon to be five) of the eleven are employed by Omar - Les Field, Lloyd Kent, Jason Spooner and Craig Tyson. Emergency calls can occur at any time and on average the team is called out around 30 times a month during the summer period, many of which are during work hours, although during the heat wave in July, this increased to around 50.
Les Field, Yard Supervisor at Omar Group and On-call Firefighter for 25 years commented: “Omar has made a huge contribution to Brandon Fire Station, support which goes back over 40 years. Companies like Omar who release On-call Firefighters to attend emergency incidents, genuinely contribute to saving lives within Suffolk and the surrounding counties.”
Graeme Craig, Chief Executive at Omar Group commented: “As the largest employer in Brandon, it’s fantastic to be able to give back to the community and we’re delighted to have received this award. The real recognition though should go to the four guys - Les, Lloyd, Jason and Craig who put their own lives on the line to save lives and keep the community safe.”
Henry Griffin,Deputy District Commander for the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service who nominated Omar for the award commented: “We’re incredibly grateful to Omar Group for their continued support to the service and the on-call crew members that are allowed to be released from employment as and when required. Omar currently release the largest number of employees in the area and their support is critical in being able to provide life-saving services to the local community; the Certificate of Merit awarded is very much deserved!”
